Cats of Leros, Cats of Heliada
Like any self-respecting Greek home, Heliada already has its little residents wandering around in a pastoral way, even throughout the construction work. Naturally, because we feed them, the little neighbors show their noses. Mainly black cats and black-and-white ones.
We refuse to let these little creatures live in garbage bins under deplorable conditions and see their life expectancy reduced to a minimum. Today, a surge of humanity drives us to care for more than 150 cats! Thank you in advance for your generosity!
The Cats of Leros Total Abandonment
The feline population on Leros is estimated at over 2,000 animals across the island. These cats are not merely strays; they are an integral part of the community and deserve our love and care. Cat welfare is a shared responsibility to which we can all contribute. It is simply the BIODIVERSITY COMPONENT OF A REAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY.
Love from Some, Mistreatment from Others
They are all adorable, yet they are often called “dumpster cats”… because they live—or more accurately, survive—on the waste discarded by residents! Many locals do their best, each in their own way, to care for the cats… with modest means, generosity, and dedication. Lacking cars, it is difficult for them to transport the animals to the vet. As always, a small gesture from everyone would have a tremendous impact. Foreign visitors traveling to Leros are very sensitive to this cause, and it could serve as a wonderful showcase for the island, enhancing its appeal.
When they try to enter homes searching for a little food or water, they are all too often greeted with brooms!
It is not uncommon to see kittens thrown into trash bins or even suffocated in the rubbish.
This happens in every area, as some residents do not hesitate to abandon them far from home, with zero chance of survival, in Merikia and other deserted parts of the island.
Sometimes, starving, they venture into tavernas looking for food; they have no other choice. Restaurant owners often chase them away fearing they might lose customers. A simple act of kindness, such as offering them food and fresh water, could make all the difference for these cats.
Animal abuse is severely punished by Greek law, with heavy fines reaching tens of thousands of euros.
Zero Action from the Municipality = Complete Neglect
Even though the municipality claims that the cats are under its protection, it does absolutely nothing for the island’s feline population.
The municipal budget for stray animals is around €250,000 per year—roughly €200k for dogs and €50k for cats. There is zero transparency on how these funds are spent. Not a single person has been hired by the municipality to carry out any related actions.
Never any food or water provided. Even offering a little fresh water during the suffocating summer heat is not on their agenda.
No spay/neuter programs.
No veterinary care; during the winter of 2026, a severe outbreak of pneumonia—a devastating lung virus that kills kittens in under 24 hours—hit the island. No one did anything for these dying cats on the roadsides, just meters away from the population! A horrific death by suffocation that deserved so much more humanity!
The Tourists’ Fascination
Many visitors fall in love with the cats of Leros and want to help improve their lives. It is heartwarming to see tourists interact with the cats, enriching both their stay and the cats’ daily lives. Foreigners frequently feed local cats that are otherwise left entirely to their fate.
In summer, you can provide water for the cats during your stay; a water bowl costs just €1. A bag of kibble costs around €30, and you will bring immense joy to your little hosts.
It is not that difficult to bring a little Lerian cat back home with you:
A standard carrier so they can travel with you in the cabin
Microchip identification and a pet passport / health record
Vaccinations completed within the required timeframe
THE HEIGHT OF HORROR FOR THE CATS OF PANDELI
Every cat deserves love and attention, especially the cats of Leros.
Every effort counts when it comes to improving the lives of Leros’s cats.
In April 2025, repeating just before the 2026 season, more than 40 cats were found dead one morning in Pandeli, evidently poisoned. The local community was deeply shocked, especially since Greek animal welfare legislation is very strict.
Despite a €5,000 reward, the case went nowhere. On an island where everyone knows everything, yet nothing is said…
WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY DONE
The cats of Leros are completely abandoned—without water, without food, without medical care.
Our mission is to improve the lives of these cats and provide them with better living conditions. Every small act of kindness toward them can significantly enhance their lives. All donations go directly toward the well-being of the cats of Leros.
Our goal is to meet the essential needs of these cats so they can thrive rather than merely survive.
WHAT WE CAN DO WITH YOUR DONATIONS
Feeding and caring for these cats is a collective responsibility: we feel very alone!
Every day, we provide water and kibble to the stray cats gathering around the island’s rubbish bins in Alinda and Aghia Marina. They congregate there hoping to find scraps, but that is not what they truly need. Their survival depends on us: we must ensure they receive proper nourishment and care.
Spaying & Neutering
We actively encourage sterilization within local communities and spay/neuter as many cats as possible to prevent unwanted litters of kittens. We are committed to supporting the protection and rescue of neglected, abandoned, and abused stray cats.
Our mission is to ensure that all cats receive the essential support for spaying and neutering.
If you make a donation, you can specify where you would like us to distribute the kibble. We will send you photos and videos showing the happiness you brought them.
If you wish to take your support further, you can also help us fund veterinary care (vaccinations, wound treatments, etc.) and spay/neuter procedures to curb overpopulation, as no official support exists on this beautiful small island.
